REKISHI
As with most koryu the history of Asayama Ichiden Ryu has been partially lost or shrouded in mystery. It is known that there were several branches of the ryu that were active in various parts of Japan. One theory is that the school was practiced by Goshi ("Country Samurai") in the 1600's and the origin of the ryu is credited to a one Asayama Ichidensai. Apparently an accomplished warrior he one day prayed to the deity Fudo Myo Oh (the immovable light king) in Asayama village. After this encounter he became enlightened and was known for his taijutsu (unarmed skills) and kenjutsu (sword skills). Other sources say that he had other teachers and this isn't uncommon for warriors of Japan. It is thought that he studied a kenjutsu school called Shinto Ryu (true sword school) before founding his own Asayama Ichiden Ryu.
At one time it is said that the Ryu was comprised of a variety of martial skills including weapons and unarmed fighting but mainly focused on taijutsu, kenjutsu and bojutsu. The curriculum was divided up into Ten (heaven), Chi (earth) and Jin (human) sections. Today there are several branches of the ryu still being taught. These branches focus mainly on the unarmed skills of the school.
